Recycling Program

Toccoa’s recycling program makes it easy to save energy and natural resources.

The City of Toccoa has been providing curbside recycling pickup since 1994. The recycling crew averages 800 pickups per day five days a week. It's part of what we're doing to reduce the amount of material taken to landfills.

After the City of Toccoa collects recyclable items from your home, City Officials sell the materials to companies who reuse them. This revenue helps to pay for the cost of providing door-to-door recycling.

The following recyclables are taken to the Recycling Center for storage until they are taken or sent to market:

  • Aluminum (soda cans, beer cans)
  • Glass Containers (clear, brown, green)
  • Magazines (slick inserts, magazines)
  • Newspaper (newsprint)
  • Plastic (milk jugs, 2 & 3 liter bottles, any bottles marked with the numbers 1 or 2 and with a neck)
  • Steel cans (soup cans, green bean cans)
  • Cardboard

Cardboard recycling offered by Toccoa

Cardboard can be recycled at the designated "Cardboard Only" dumpsters around town, or at the designated area at most County Convenience Centers. Items must be clean and not contain foreign material. Toccoa gets the most money for cardboard and newspaper material.

Recycle these cardboard items in designated receptacles

  • Cardboard boxes (corrugated boxes)
  • Most food boxes (i.e. cereal boxes)
  • Cardboard items not recyclable: Pizza Boxes, Milk Cartons, Paperboard egg cartons, any cardboard with a “waxy” type coating

Recycling personnel would like the public’s help to make recycling faster and, at the same time, a better service:

  • Please remove all lids from the plastic and the glass.
  • Rinse all plastic, glass, metal, and aluminum.  (This helps to keep down odor and rodents. These must be stored in our recycle building until we accumulate approximately 20 tons and especially in warmer weather, we could have a problem if they are not clean.)
  • It is NOT necessary to remove labels from anything.
  • Please, do not use bags. We cannot recycle them, have no receptacle on the truck for them and, with the protective gloves the men must wear; removing items from bags is difficult.

With these few helpful hints it will help make our recycling program run easier.  If you have any questions regarding recycling within the city call  706-282-3297, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
