Job Title:  Street/Grounds Maintenance Crew Worker I PS-MSW/8

Department:  Maintenance/Solid Waste, City of Toccoa

Job Summary:  This position is responsible for operating mowers and other equipment to maintain the grounds at city buildings, parks, and rights-of-way.

Major Duties:

  • Operates landscape maintenance equipment to mow and trim grassed areas, clear overgrown brush, and install plants.
  • Rakes leaves.
  • Clears drainage pipes.
  • Picks up litter and trash along city streets and at city facilities.
  • Provides routine maintenance of landscaping equipment by performing such duties as checking oil and fluid levels and sharpening blades.
  • May drive a garbage truck along a predetermined route.
  • Trims trees and hedges; chips limbs and leaves.
  • Installs street signs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of city, department, and safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining grounds maintenance equipment such as tractors, mowers, weed eaters, blowers, sprayers, chainsaws, and tillers.
  • Skill in using various hand and power tools.

Supervisory Controls:  The Public Works Superintendent, Assistant Public Works Superintendent, or Parks and Cemetery Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.  The work is reviewed for accuracy, compliance with instructions and established procedures, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines:  Guidelines include department and safety rules and regulations, work orders, and supervisory instructions.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

Complexity:  The work consists of related street and grounds maintenance duties.  The need to work around traffic contributes to the complexity of the work. 

Scope and Effect:  The purpose of this position is to maintain city streets and grounds.  Successful performance helps ensure safe, attractive landscapes and rights-of-way and enhances the public image of the city.

Personal Contacts:  Contacts are typically with co-workers.

Purpose of Contacts:  Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.

Physical Demands:  The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking.  The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

Work Environment:  The work is performed outdoors.  The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather.  The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

Supervisory and Management Responsibilities:  None.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • No experience requirements.
