JOB TITLE: Right-of-Way Crew Worker II                               

DEPARTMENT:  Right-of-Way Crew, City of Toccoa

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing right-of-way maintenance and repair duties.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Operates landscape maintenance equipment to mow and trim grassed areas, clear overgrown brush, and install plants.
  • Provides routine maintenance of landscaping equipment by performing such duties as checking oil and fluid levels and sharpening blades.
  • Clears brush and trees from rights-of-way.
  • May operate equipment such as a bulldozer, backhoe, motor grader, and front-end loader.
  • Maintains tools and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of city and department safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of right-of-way maintenance techniques.
  • Skill in operating equipment such as a mower, bulldozer, backhoe, motor grader, and front-end loader.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Public Works Director and Utilities Director or Right-of-Way Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for accuracy, compliance with procedures, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures and state Department of Transportation regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related right-of-way maintenance and repair duties. Working around utility lines contributes to the complexity of the work. 

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to perform right-of way maintenance and repair duties. Successful performance helps ensure safe and serviceable and city right-of-ways.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
